Speaking to the press last week, Armand Soleil Bata, head of the climate forecast department at the National Observatory on Climate Change in Cameroon (Onacc), said the amount of precipitation in the next three months should be significantly higher than that recorded in the last recent fifty years on the national territory. He continues by indicating that the Central, Southern, Western, Eastern and Littoral regions are particularly affected by these forecasts.

According to the same forecasts, the return of this precipitation is expected for the second part of this month of March. Even if some towns in the country have already been showered by the first rains of this start of winter. This is the case of Yaoundé and Douala, the two main metropolises of Cameroon.

These Onacc forecasts are already of concern to decentralized local authorities. This is the case of Douala town hall, which is working to avoid further flooding this year. To achieve this objective, the town hall has launched drain sanitation work. Mayor Roger Mbassa Ndine personally went to inspect the sanitation work on the drain which overlooks the Wouri, the river which crosses the city.

“The recovery is underway for better water flow. We are going to go upstream of the drain so that in the event of heavy rain, it plays its major role which is to fight against flooding,” the councilor explained to the daily Cameroon tribune, during his descent.
