Anglophone crisis: Speaker of the North West House of Chiefs released after nearly two years in captivity

Fon of Bambalang

Yakum Kevin Teuvih is now free. The Fon (senior chief) of Bambalang, president of the House of Chiefs of the North West Regional Council and vice-president of the said council was seen on Thursday, June 1, 2023 free of his movements.

The circumstances of his release are not known while some indiscretions claim that it was the army that carried out an operation to free him. The Fon of Bambalang had been kidnapped in December 2021 by a separatist militia.

Facing the press in Bamenda, Adolphe Lele Lafrique salutes the collaboration between the defense forces and the population.

For him, the traditional Chief has demonstrated the “professionalism of our defense and security forces acting under the high instructions of the Head of State”. He had instructed them to do everything possible to free the Fon of Bambalang safe and sound. The operations took place in the division of Bui.

According to the governor, this is a sign of the return to peace in this part of the country. “An element which confirms that things are returning to normal, that the populations are watching the head of state in his appeal and his outstretched hand. I therefore take this opportunity to condemn all the acts, the atrocities, the kidnappings of these terrorists. We therefore want all populations to remobilize after this event,” he urges.
