During a press briefing he gave on Friday January 12 in Yaoundé, the Minister of Public Health, Manaouda Malachie indicated that Cameroon has 13 second category hospitals. Only 8 of these health facilities are functional and 6 are being finalized, said the Minister of Public Health.
2nd category hospitals are central hospitals, directly attached to departments of the Ministry of Public Health. These central hospitals are for example Yaoundé Central Hospital, Jamot Hospital in Yaoundé, or the Laquintinie Hospital in Douala, or the Sangmelima Reference Hospital. It differs firstly from general hospitals, which are 1st category. In addition to these hospitals, the government has in recent years developed regional hospital centers like those in Bafoussam and Garoua. Several others are still under construction.
“The ongoing enrichment of the health map now includes 7 first category hospitals for ultra-specialized reference care (…) 18 regional hospitals (3rd category), 166 District hospitals (4th category), 295 Centers District Medical Centers (5th category) and 2,300 Integrated Health Centers (6th category),” congratulated the Minister Manaouda.
He also adds that “in terms of infrastructure, the country has made a big leap with the construction and rehabilitation of numerous health facilities (Fosa) to international standards, like the Regional Hospital Centers (CHR)”.
For the year 2024, the Ministry of Public Health should benefit, depending on the distribution of the state envelope, from a budget of 255 billion FCFA, including 196 billion FCFA for operations and 59 billion FCFA for investment.
