For Yvette Muhimpundu, the new country representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Cameroon is a model in terms of refugee protection.
She made this known at the end of a courtesy visit she paid to the Minister of Public Health, Malachie Manaouda, on December 18. “Cameroon is a host country. It is a hospitable country that has welcomed refugees for decades,” Yvette Muhimpundu declared. This is not the first time that the UNHCR has spoken so highly of the country of the Indomitable Lions. The UN organization has always appreciated Cameroon’s ability to accommodate a large population of refugees on its soil. Yvette Muhimpundu estimates that about half a million refugees are currently staying throughout the national triangle. Last June, an exact count by the UNHCR announced 460 thousand refugees.
The UNHCR also congratulates Cameroon for the benefits that the government grants to refugees. According to the testimony of the UNHCR, they are entitled to the same benefits as Cameroonians. In addition, the UNHCR believes that the process of including refugees among host populations is done without much problem in Cameroon. Cameroon, for its part, shows its intention to continue to guarantee better reception conditions for refugees, even if the bill is not insignificant. The parliamentarians members have also questioned the government on this subject. In response, the government has shown its willingness to continue its humanitarian action with the help of humanitarian organizations.
