The objective is to enable Cameroon to initiate its green and digital transition, through resilient agro-pastoral development backed by green, inclusive and sustainable cities.
On Tuesday October 4, 2022 in Yaoundé, Alamine Ousmane Mey, the Cameroonian Ministry of Economy, Planning and Regional Development (Minepat) and Philippe Van Damme, Ambassador Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU ) in Cameroon have signed agreements to fund two initiatives aimed at supporting Cameroon’s efforts towards greener and more sustainable development for its people and jobs, while contributing to the improvement of urban governance in Cameroon.
In partnership with its Member States (Team Europe), the EU and Cameroon will act for resilient territorial development in the three northern regions of Cameroon, so as to enable populations to face deep vulnerabilities. Based on inclusive and peaceful governance of the territories, this approach is also available through the development of mobility infrastructure and investments in improving the quality of life, particularly in the cities of Yaoundé, Douala and Maroua.
Philippe Van Damme, Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Cameroon, explained that these two initiatives fall within the guidelines of the Green Deal adopted by the EU and its Member States, which aims to promote measures that strengthen the European continent and the world in the process of ecological transformation, with the ultimate goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
For the European Union, this is an ultimate choice, which aims to achieve sustainable development and create young and decent jobs. With an envelope estimated at 29 billion FCFA, the EU grant will make it possible to reconcile the interests of farmers and breeders, while preserving the ecosystems essential to the fight against desertification and climate change. By promoting controlled urban development, all the actions planned for this purpose fall within the framework of European support for the effective implementation of decentralization in Cameroon.
