The agents of the town hall of the city crisscross the corners to recover these people wandering in the corners of the city.

The 33rd edition of the African Nations Cup (CAN) kicks off on Sunday January 9. And a few days before this high mass in continental football, the Cameroonian authorities are keen on the image of Cameroon as the apple of their eye. They would not want foreigners to retain the image of Cameroon as an unhealthy country with cities plagued by urban disorder.

This is also the meaning of an operation initiated since the beginning of this week by the Urban Community of Yaoundé, which has decided to launch a hunt for “mentally patient” people, reports the daily Le Jour on Tuesday 4. January 2022. Community agents, accompanied by police officers, roam the streets of the capital in pursuit of people with intellectual disabilities, whose presence does not seem to please the authorities on the eve of this African Cup of Nations.

“We do not want to see people walking in the city of Yaoundé during the whole period of the African Nations Cup. We have been instructed to travel all the main roads of the city to question the mentally ill and take them to Jamot hospital where they will be fed, ”one of the agents told the Haman Mana newspaper.

Our colleagues also reveal that during the day of Monday January 3, 2022, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., more than 20 mental patients were apprehended between the central post office and the central market of Yaoundé, and taken to Jamot hospital, known to welcome this kind of patient.
