During the month of September, “129 security incidents were recorded, with a total of 15 people killed.” This count is contained in the recent report of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on the humanitarian situation in the Far North region.
This region has been plagued for 10 years by attacks and incursions by Boko Haram fighters from neighboring Nigeria. OCHA also counts that 12 people were kidnapped during these attacks, which left 11 injured. “Insecurity led to the displacement of 7,478 people in the divisions of Mayo [1] Tsanaga and Logone and Chari,” we can read in this report.
As an example of the insecurity in the region, OCHA reports the attack on the integrated health centres of Gouzda Wayam and Oupai-Manak, in the district of Mozogo, division of Mayo Tsanaga. This division, along with those of Mayo Sava and Logone et Chari, which have the particularity of being backed by the border with Nigeria, are the most affected by attacks by Boko Haram and its affiliated groups.
OCHA also notes that these armed groups continue to engage in “predatory activities, kidnappings, assassinations and illicit taxation, particularly in the Lake Chad area”.
