Many civilians were killed on Sunday June 26, 2022 in the village of Mesaka, Akawya district in the South West region of Cameroon.

According to several concordant sources, dozens of civilians were killed in Mesaka, a village located in the Akawya district in the Southwest region of Cameroon. Quoted by Anadolu Agency, Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai confirmed the massacre without however giving an assessment or mentioning the actors of this killing.

We are alongside the inhabitants of Akwaya. More than 32 people killed in Akwaya yesterday. Houses burned and destroyed. Women and children are the most affected,” said the organization “Women peacebuilder’s network”, an NGO of women activists and civil society in the North West.

Another security source also specifies houses were destroyed and burned by armed men. Pending an official reaction from the Cameroonian authorities, the two camps accuse each other. Some accuse the English-speaking separatists while others attribute this barbarity to government forces.

This massacre comes at a time when the NGO Human Rights Watch warns of the resurgence of violence in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon, which have been in the grip of secession since 2016. In recent days, several soldiers have lost their lives in separatist ambushes in these regions.
